Off the coast of Peru are hundreds of wild dolphins. You don't get to swim with them, that would be contrary to the Dolphin Conservation Project run by Mundo Azul. However you can get to find them and photograph them. Mundo Azul run a volunteer project from the Paracas National Reserve, 250 kms south of the capital Lima, and Pucusana, a small fishing village closer to Lima. The project's aim is to photograph and identify as many of the coastal dolphins as possible. Dolphins still make it into the human food chain in some parts of Peru. Dolphin identification is no easy task. It requires a lightning reflex, a steady hand, and a great camera. Not to mention getting your sea-legs first. It means taking...

I hope you read and enjoyed Encouraging Wildlife Habitats in the Garden - Part 1 of this series and have been able to action some of the tips I included therein. Here in Part 2, I shall share with you another 5 Tips to further encourage wildlife in your garden and landscape. Tip 1 Build a Pond - All animals need water; a pond will draw frogs, birds, snails and dragonflies to name but a few. The inclusion of a shallow ledge as a planting platform with the gently sloping sides of the pond will allow safe access to and from the water for creatures that use the pond to drink and bathe. Adding aquatic plants will encourage visitors including butterflies, damsel flies and dragonflies, the plants will also...

As a teacher myself who used to teach Science to junior school students for years, I have seen a lot of confusion about whales and dolphins and even some frustration concerning their classification. What is the fuss all about? The frustration is basically coming into play when confused people talk about both dolphins and whales as being fishes so when they are being corrected about it, they tend to hate it. According to them, what lives in the water must be a fish otherwise it wouldn't be there. Isn't that right? Wrong! The fact and the matter is that fishes like the great white shark and marine mammals such as dolphins and whales are not under the same classification simply because of the way...

Observing Nature in our own back yard can be a wonderful thing. Few things are as relaxing as watching animals from the comfort of a garden bench, a patio, or from a window in our home. To increase the level of birds and butterflies (and ultimately wildlife in general), try strategically planting a few of the following trees and shrubs in your backyard habitat. 1. Flowering Dogwood 2. Serviceberry 3. Holly 4. Spicebush 5. Hawthorn 6. Flowering Crabapple 7. Colorado Blue Spruce 8. Butterfly Bush Birds and butterflies love these varieties because they provide shelter and food. Before you begin planting, observe how nature "manages" its flora and fauna. Trees and plants do not grow in straight lines...

If you want to swim with bottlenose and spotted dolphins, both trained and wild, the Florida coast is an ideal destination. Bottlenose and spotted dolphins are the most gentle and intelligent mammals next to humans and even more when you meet them. You'll be able to swim with dolphins when you visit them in the Florida, Key Largo, Key West area, and Miami, Fort Lauderdale area. You can choose from shallow-water swimming experiences with trained dolphins and deep-water encounters with wild dolphins. In shallow water enclave, you can spend time working with a trainer from a platform, as the dolphins perform tricks on command. You can also swim with the dolphins, as they will do toe pushes and body...

Many visitors to Hawaii dream of swimming with the dolphins. Hawaii offers many different opportunities to interact with these fabulous creatures. You can happen upon them on your own when swimming in the ocean, but there are many activities companies who will take you in comfort to areas where your chances are the best of seeing and actually swimming with the dolphins as they play in their natural environment. Or you can choose a program where the dolphins are in a lagoon or closed of area, rather than in the open ocean. Either way, this is one of the best experiences you can have in the Paradise of the Hawaiian Islands. This is far from an all-inclusive list, but does give you an idea of the types...

Puerto Vallarta sits on the largest natural bay in Mexico, and it would be a shame to visit the city and not pay a visit to the area's friendliest marine mammals. After all, some people speculate that cetaceans (the species that includes dolphins and whales) are extremely intelligent. They may be wrong, or they may be right; if they're right, local dolphins may feel slighted if you overlook them. It's completely natural for visitors to gravitate toward the water; after all, it's right there and it's big. Folks bail out of their villa Puerto Vallarta each morning looking for some kind of adventure on the high seas. Many people jump on the chance to interact with dolphins; they set off on an excursion...

Every year, between the months of December and May, volunteers from the Los Angeles branch of The American Cetacean Society gather daily at the Point Vicente Interpretive Center on the Palos Verdes Peninsula to participate in a census of whales passing through the Catalina Channel. Since this is one of our favorite walking trails in all of LA we often stop by, say hello to the participants, ask them questions and analyze the data that is presented. Not that we know how many whales appeared or should have appeared be but it is always interesting to note that just a few miles off the coast of one of world's largest metropolis areas, whales swim by, almost unnoticed, on their yearly migration. What...

As you are gazing out over the water, you are surprised by a sudden burst through the water's surface. As you watch, you are amazed and delighted by the graceful ballet you are privileged to witness by the most wonderful creatures of the sea. The dolphins arch gracefully through the air and plunge back into the water to come up again in another fabulous leap to your delight. How wonderful it would be to capture this beauty and grace forever! That is very possible with rings that are created to exhibit just this quality. Dolphin rings in many styles and designs are available that express perfectly the grace of a leaping dolphin as it dances in the air. Sometimes showing a spectacular leap and...

If your summer vacation plans have you buying tickets to a marine mammal park or a "swim with the dolphins" program, be forewarned: You could be helping to finance the slaughter of dolphins in the wild. This is the captive-animal industry's dirty little secret. Every year, thousands of dolphins are killed in gruesome "drive fisheries" in Japan. Most end up as meat in local supermarkets. But a few of the dolphins captured during these government-sanctioned oikomi will end up in aquariums and marine parks instead. The sale of a handful of live dolphins funds the deaths of all the rest. In October and November 2006, photojournalist Boyd Harnell observed the drive fishery in Taiji, Japan. "It was a...
